The Department of the Ethnography of Volga Region Peoples

The bases of the modern collection on the ethnography of Volga region and the Urals were put in 1902-1914. In its present state the department was organized on December 1, 2006.

        For many years the department staff has worked on methods of description, classification and attribution of separate objects and collections. The outputs of these activities are the chapters “Attribution methods of thematic groups of objects. Jewelry” of the reference guide “The system of scientific description of museum objects: classification, methodology, terminology” as well as the chapter “Ivory and horn” in the book “Terms’ classificators and terminological explicative dictionaries” by Olga A.Kondratieva.

        Prominent place in research activities of departments occupies the study of museum history and personalities who made the most important contribution to advancement of ethnographic discipline, to foundation and development of the Russian Museum of Ethnography and formation of its collection. The department’s staff took active part in work on the album “The Russian Museum of Ethnography.1902-2002” which commemorated the 100th museum anniversary. Currently the main research topics of the department are
