The Centenarian History of the Russian Museum of Ethnography: Main Dates

April 1895 Establishment of the Russian Museum of the Emperor Alexander III.

January 1902 The Ethnographic Department of the Russian Museum of the Emperor Alexander III is founded.

June 1923 The Ethnographic Department of the State Russian Museum is opened to the general public.

March 1934 The Ethnographic Department of the State Russian Museum is reorganized in independent institution the State Ethnographic Museum.

June 1948 The State Museum of Ethnography is opened for the public after repairing damage caused by the Second World War.

August 1948 The collections of the former Museum of the Peoples of the USSR in Moscow are joint with the collection of the State Ethnographic Museum in Leningrad.

1954 The repairs of damage caused by the Second World War are finished.

1977 the State Ethnographic Museum of the Peoples of the USSR receives the status of the research institution of the third category.

1979 The State Ethnographic Museum of the Peoples of the USSR is confirmed in the register of the Soviet Scientific-Methodical Center of Ethnographic Museology with simultaneous establishment of the specialized department.

1986 The State Ethnographic Museum of the Peoples of the USSR receives the status of the research institution of the fist category.

December 1991 — The State Ethnographic Museum of the Peoples of the USSR is included in the State Register of the Especially Valuable Objects of Cultural Heritage of the Peoples of Russian Federation.
