Restoration: Craft and Art
The exhibition “Restoration: Craft and Art” has been opened at the Russian Museum of Ethnography celebrating the 100th anniversary of its restoration workshop.
The exhibition consists of two large sections. The first section is dedicated to several generations of restorers. Its main objective is to tell about the people who worked at museum restoration workshop in different periods of museum history. The exhibition is supplemented with rare photographs and film dedicated to the distinguished restorers, who gave second life to rare and ancient objects. Their remarkable skill and commitment match the art of old masters who once crafted the objects of the RME collection.
The second section shows results of restorers’ work. Here visitor will see more than hundred museum objects made of textile, metal, wood, birch bast, stone, gypsum, papier-mâché, bone, ceramic, fur, feathers and other materials. These items reflect daily life and culture of the peoples of the Russian Empire in middle nineteenth –early twentieth century.
The exhibition will be opened for the public until the mid-January 2017.
