|
From the September 21 to September 23 the Russian Museum of Ethnography welcomes the event "The Korean Paper from Jeonju" - a festival of Korean art of paparcraft. It was estimated that the method of paper making would have transmitted from the China to the Korea in A.D.3th~4th century. The traditional Korean paper was given a name of Hanji and the city of Jeonju became by the Choseon dynasty the "capital of paper" an also the biggest intellectual center of Korea well-known around the worlds. Hanji is strong, light, warm, and excellent for its ability to absorb color so that it can be used for multiple purposes. The Korean paper was traditionally used for calligraphy, oriental printing but also for clothing, furniture, accessories and so on. Besides the history of Hanji papercraft in Korea, the exhibition will show the contemporary use of Hanji in fashion design which is both the evolution from its historical roots and the environmentally friendly idea of natural materials in everyday life. 11 fashion shows are held annually in Korea and we invite you to take part in the same fashion-show in our museum. The workshop of papercraft will introduce you to the 'Jumchi'method (crumpling and unfolding the overlaid papers many times) and its multiple use.
