Centenary of the Museum
The celebrations devoted to the centenary of the Russian Museum of Ethnography took place in January, 2002. Еxactly in January, 1902 it is considered that the museum was founded - on that day the regular schedule and financing of the Ethnographic Department of the Russian Museum of the Emperor Alexander III were established.
To start with the celebrations, there was organized the "Ceremonial meeting" which took place in the Marble hall of the Russian Museum of Ethnography. The Governor of St. Petersburg, Vladimir Yakovlev, and the Minister of Culture, Mikhail Shvydkoy, together with the researchers from Saint-Petersburg and abroad participated in this Meeting.
Within the frames of the anniversary program from 23rd to 25th of January, there was held an international scientific conference "Traditions and ethnicity in 20-21 centuries "at the Museum. Among the participants there were researchers from Russia and foreign neighboring countries, ethnologists and curators from France, Spain, the Netherlands, Germany and Italy. The discussion was concentrated on such themes as "Actual problems of the studying process of the ethnic traditions" and" mutual relations between visitors and museum ".
During these days the renovation of the Children's Ethnographic Center created on the basis of the RME was finished. During the anniversary celebrations, the centre housed exhibitions of the children's artistic works and master classes on artistic crafts.
Employees of the RME for the Centenary of the museum prepared a number of publications. The illustrated album "The Russian Museum of Ethnography. 1902-2002" was published for the first time in the history of the museum. This album contained not only a detailed description of the history of the museum and characteristic of the richest collection of the monuments of the traditional culture but also included information about the contemporary situation which arose in the RME.
Editions devoted to various collections of the museum were published separately. Such books as a Guidebook on "the Russian Museum of Ethnography ", a series of booklets- " the Marble hall " and the " Golden Room " appeared. By nowadays catalogues devoted to the "Carpet Room" and the Ukrainian ceramics had been already published.
The geography of the foreign exhibition activity during the anniversary year was rather extensive. Exhibitions from the museum collections were on the display at the National Museum of the National Traditions of Rome, in the Municipal Exhibition Center of Antwerp, at the Museum of Prehistory and Valencian culture.
The central event of the anniversary celebrations became the opening of the exhibition "People and things ", which consisted of two sections: "Those who lived will never turn into nothing" and " Hundred steps of perfection. Textiles of the people of the Northern Eurasia ". The exhibition shows the monuments of culture created by people of many nationalities, living on a vast area of the Northern Eurasia and, tells about the ethnologists who have kept their history for their descendants.
At the end of the anniversary year in the Marble hall of the Russian Museum of Ethnography the exhibition - " Parade of peoples ", devoted to the multinational history of Russia, has been opened and is still available on the display.
To conclude, the year 2002 was marked by one important event in the life of the museum. On January, 15 the statuary " Athena and Geniuses of Glory " has been returned after restoration.
