Presepio. Christmas tradition of Italy
9 December, 2006 - 18 January, 2007
Unique exhibition of the Italian Nativity scenes is held in the Russian Museum of Ethnography, Saint-Petersburg. This exhibition represents artistic, cultural and spiritual heritage of Italy.
Presepio or the Nativity scene is the 3D scene of the birth of Christ with decorative elements and figures which could be moved following the idea of the artist.
It is the first time when typical Italian tradition of the Nativity scenes is so fully represented in Russia.
The exhibition contains two sections. The first section represents the nativity scenes produced by craftsmen from different regions of Italy. These scenes show the continuity and succession of the folk traditions and carry visitors of the exhibition with fascination of Christmas.
Nativity scenes not only demonstrate the variety of the artistic techniques but also the materials which were different for each school. Quite often master used only what he had at his disposal. And that is how there appeared scenes made of hand-painted papier-mache, metal, wood, stone, terracotta, plaster cast, bark, corkwood, etc. Fantasy, experiments with materials helped artists to create original and unique art pieces.
The second section of the exhibition represents items of the folk artistic crafts of Italy which are connected with the Christmas holidays. This part of the exhibition introduces visitors to the Italian tradition of Christmas celebrations. "Gallery of crafts" tries to show the way of life in Italy by exposing objects of the house's interior: furniture, bronze, cut-glass ware.
