Shamanism
Shamanism is one of the most important symbols of the traditional culture of Siberian native population. This album is the first publication on this subject that fully based on the unique collection of material objects and historical photographs which had been acquired for the Russian Museum of Ethnography over the course of more than 100 years. This project, which gives a complete idea of shamanism as a phenomenon of culture, is based on research work of the curators of the department of Siberia and the Far East, and on the materials of several exhibitions arranged in Russia and abroad in the period of 1900-2005.
The authors introduce the readers to the history of assembling the collections of the museum (Valentina V. Gorbacheva), reveal the versatility of shamanism analyzing its peculiar features among the peoples of Siberia (Tatiana Yu. Sem, Karina Yu. Soloviova). The book contains 200 historic photographs and 170 artifacts; all the monuments are accompanied by detailed descriptions which reflect the meaning and specific character of each object in the context of the phenomenon discussed.
An original design of the edition reproduces a surprising world of shamanistic rituals with its peculiar attributes, and enables a reader to immerse into an atmosphere of the unique worldview, which reflects the interaction of man and nature.
