From October 30 th to November 30 nd
The exhibition "Amazonia of Claude Levi-Strauss" is timed to the centenary of this brilliant researcher- one of the most important scholars of the XX century, ethnologist and social anthropologist, who was the first to develop and apply structural method to non-literate cultures. The exhibition represents photos made during his first expedition (of 1935) to the Indian Peoples of Western Brazil - Caduveo and Bororo which give an opportunity to see traditions of those peoples and their almost forgotten spiritual heritage. The following subjects are highlighted: the ritual dance separating the deads and the livings, clothes and adornments, sophisticated facial paintings to add female attractiveness and to indicate social position.
This is the first time that the exhibition of the collections of expeditions of Levi-Strauss takes place in Russia. It will introduce you to the different perception of reality expressed in complex symbolism.
All the exhibition rights belong to the Museum in the Quay Branly (Musee du Quai Branly, Paris), with the amiable support of the Ministry of Culture of France and the Embassy of France in Moscow. The exhibition is supplemented with the publications of Levi-Strauss works in French and Russian.
