The exhibition presents the unique collection of the shirts from the Russian museum of Ethnography.

The shirt construction and the decoration define by its functionality of the object, the age stratification and territorial belongings. For all variety of male and female shirt cuts, the most archaic was tunic-like cut. In different places it could change. In 19th - early 20th century the everyday shirts usually were sewed of the homemade fabric (flax, hemp, cotton, silk and wool), and for the festive shirts the expensive manufactured fabrics were used (silk, satin, velvet, muslin, etc.)

The shirts worn next to the skin - is one of the identifying element of the tradition clothes. Over the centuries shirts kept the ethnic feature of different peoples.

In the same time the shirt endowed with the magic characteristics, symbolic content and performed the emblematic function in many traditional cultures. It carried the information about the place and the time of its making, about its festive or everyday wearing, indicated the gender, the age group of its owner and reflected the marital status.

The shirt worn next to the skin or the other clothes that worn near the skin, were the basic of every traditional costume of different peoples from all over the territory of Russia.
